Chris Draper is a zoologist and chartered biologist, working for the Born Free Foundation on their Zoo Check program, investigating the welfare of wild animals in captivity, and taking a lead on zoo animal welfare issues, elephant welfare and Born Free’s Compassionate Conservation initiative.
Since 2014, he has sat on the UK’s Wild Animal Welfare Committee. Over the years, he has worked for several animal welfare organizations on issues involving laboratory animals, farmed animals and wildlife. Before that, he worked as an animal keeper in a sanctuary in the USA with a range of wild animals – and primarily with 50 retired laboratory chimpanzees.
Chris is also the European Coordinator for the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. He is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Bristol on the implementation of legislation and assessment of animal welfare in zoos.
